UNISFA

Abyei Area is an area of 10,546 square kilometers  in Sudan accorded "special administrative status" by the 2004 Protocol on the Resolution of the Abyei Conflict   in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) that ended the Second Sudanese Civil War. Under the terms of the Abyei Protocol, the Abyei Area was declared to be simultaneously part of the states of South Kordofan and Northern Bahr el Ghazal.

Following the continued disputes that erupted into violence and threatened the CPA, an international arbitration process redrew Abyei's boundaries in 2009 to make it significantly smaller. The new revised border has now been endorsed by all parties to the dispute.

UNISFA operation has been tasked to monitor the flashpoint border between the north and south and to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid. It is authorized to use force in protecting civilians and humanitarian workers in Abyei.

UNISFA’s establishment came after the Government of Sudan and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) reached an agreement in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to demilitarize Abyei and to let the Ethiopian troops monitor the area.
